Background of the Study
Pragmatic markers play an essential role in digital communication, serving as cues that manage conversation and signal social intent. In Nigerian WhatsApp chats, these markers—such as fillers, emojis, and discourse particles—are integral to conveying emotions and managing interpersonal relationships. This study examines the use of pragmatic markers within WhatsApp chats, focusing on how they facilitate conversation flow, emphasize points, and negotiate meaning. The informal and instantaneous nature of WhatsApp fosters a dynamic environment where users continuously innovate to express subtle nuances. Cultural factors, such as regional dialects and social norms, further influence the selection and frequency of these markers (Umeh, 2023). The research analyzes patterns in marker usage and considers the implications for digital identity and social interaction. By examining WhatsApp chat patterns, the study seeks to offer insights into the evolving nature of pragmatic communication in Nigerian online spaces, thereby contributing to the broader field of digital linguistics and sociolinguistics (Eze, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although pragmatic markers are central to effective digital communication, there is limited research on their specific use in Nigerian WhatsApp chats. The fast-paced and informal nature of WhatsApp results in unique patterns of marker usage that are not fully understood. This gap in research limits our knowledge of how pragmatic strategies evolve in digital environments and hampers the development of comprehensive models for online discourse analysis (Olu, 2023).
